The Parkes telescope was inaugurated on October 31st, 1961, and
in the lead up to its 60th anniversary, we are featuring
images from the CSIRO Radio Astronomy Image Archive.
While the Dish structure has remained largely unchanged over the
years, the front-end receivers and back-end data processing equipment
have been through many changes of the six decades.
Of the many different receivers the telescope has employed, the
most productive has been the 13-beam 20cm multibeam receiver.
Built primarily for
the HIPASS survey, the receiver was also used for a number
of highly successful pulsar surveys, and discovered the first
Fast Radio Burst.
The image above, taken in 2004 when the receiver package
was off the telescope and in the lab for refurbishing,
shows the 13 feed horns of the receiver.
