Last week the Parkes radio-telescope, Murriyang,
was used as the backdrop for
an announcement of funding from the NSW Regional Tourism Activation
Fund. The Deputy Premier, and Minister for Regional NSW, Paul
Toole, announced that the NSW Government was committing $500,000 from
the Fund to upgrade the Observatory's visitor areas, provide
wheelchair accessible paths, automatic doors at the Visitor Centre and
accessible bathrooms to ensure The Dish remains a major tourism
drawcard that can be enjoyed by everyone. New space-themed play
equipment will also be installed. Funding was also awarded to enhance
the annual Elvis festival at Parkes, with not one, but two Elvis
impersonators on hand with the Mayor of Parkes to celebrate the
funding announcement! (Image credit: Franco Di Dio)
