Happy Birthday Parkes!
The Parkes 64m radio-telescope, Murriyang, was opened on this day in 1961, and so celebrates its 61st birthday today. Media coverage of the event has focussed on the story of John Sarkissian, an Operations Scientist at the Parkes Observatory (and whose photos are a regular feature of ADAPs). John signed an 11-month contract with CSIRO in 1996 to help with the tracking of NASA's Galileo spacecraft, which orbited Jupiter for more than eight years, and is still there 26 years later! Many chapters in Parkes' history are covered in the Parkes 60th Anniversary webpage.
