International Women's Day
March 8th is celebrated as International Women's Day. The United Nations first recognised International Women's Day in 1975. Since then it has been commemorated annually by the UN and much of the world, with each year focussing on a chosen theme or issue. The UN theme for this year is Cracking the Code: Innovation for a Gender Equal Future. The website internationalwomensday.com also celebrates the day, this year selecting #EmbraceEquity as its theme. Illustrating the barriers women have faced in the past, the recent paper "Breaking down barriers: standing on the shoulders of Australia’s early female chemists" considers the careers of four women who worked at CSIRO (or its predecessor, CSIR). And so, rather than choose between IWD themes for this year, today's image celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, formally observed last month. (Image credit: UNESCO)
