In 1970, James Cadle, a farmer from Illinois, proposed a design for
the Flag of Earth, a concept that had been inspired by the Apollo
moon-landings. His design consisted of a blue circle, representing the
Earth, in front of a segment of a larger yellow circle, representing
the Sun, and a smaller white circle, representing the Moon, with a
black background. This Flag of Earth gained popularity among the SETI
(Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) researchers and is shown
above flying from the focus cabin of the Parkes 64m telescope,
Murriyang, in 1995 when the telescope was contracted by the SETI
Institute for Project
Phoenix. It is claimed that James Cadle first flew his flag from
a rural power pole on this day in 1970!
