Anniversary of the Radioheliograph opening
Today is the anniversary of the opening of the Culgoora Solar Observatory, and commissioning of the Culgoora radioheliograph. The radio-heliograph, which operated from 1967 to 1984, consisted of 96 antennas arranged at 100m intervals around a 3-km diameter circle, making significant contributions to solar research over its lifetime. The Observatory, now the site of the Australia Telescope Compact Array, was opened by Senator John Gorton, who the following year went on to become Australia's 19th Prime Minister, serving in that role from January 1968 to March 1971.
