SKAO Director-General Phil Diamond was awarded a Commander of the
British Empire (CBE) medal in the UK New Year Honours List in
recognition of his services to global radio astronomy.
Phil was appointed Director-General of the SKA Organisation, the
precursor to the current Observatory, in November 2012, shortly after
the organisation’s creation. In the last 11 years, Phil
has
overseen the global engineering activities to design the two SKA
telescopes, the policy work to create the intergovernmental
organisation that is now leading the project,
and the start of construction of the telescopes.
Prior to his SKA role, Phil was Director
of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science, having
previously served as Director of the University of Manchester’s Jodrell
Bank Centre for Astrophysics, Director of e-MERLIN,
and Deputy Assistant Director for NRAO's Very Large Array and Very Long
Baseline Array.
As he has also worked in Germany and Sweden,
recognition of his services to global radio astronomy
is clearly well merited!
