Red auroral emission seen at the ATCA last weekend.
Aurora at ATCA
Four coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun last week resulted in an intense geomagnetic storm on Earth with widespread sightings of aurorae at much lower latitudes than is usually the case. This is illustrated by the image above, of red auroral emission seen looking south at the ATCA site in northern New South Wales. The picture was taken on Saturday night just as clouds rolled in bringing more rain! (Image credit: Jamie Stevens)
