The two images above show the neutral hydrogen (HI) distribution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a close neighbour of our Milky Way, using data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) on the left and a combination of Parkes and ATCA HI data on the right. An interferometer – like the ATCA – acts like a filter. In particular, the very extended HI emission is not observed due to missing short spacings, but is recovered by adding HI data from the 64-m Parkes telescope. – Participants of this week’s Radio Synthesis School in Narrabri are learning all about interferometric imaging techniques.
