Rookyard et al. have explored why some high energy pulsars emit gamma-rays while others do not. The figure shows the spin-down energy of a radio pulsar versus the width of the pulse profile. The solid points are those detected in gamma-rays, whereas the open points are not gamma-ray emitters. The authors conclude that the geometry of the pulsar is the key to whether or not we see gamma-ray emission (see figure)
