With the launch of the Parker Solar Probe over the weekend, today’s ADAP looks back at the history of solar research within CSIRO. . Yesterday’s ADAP showed an antenna of the Culgoora radio-heliograph, which was located on the site of the Australia Telescope Compact Array near Narrabri in northern NSW. The radio-heliograph, which operated initially at 80 MHz and was later expanded to operate at 160 MHz ( and has appeared in a previous ADAP ). The heliograph was co-located with some optical solar telescopes, and the image above shows the Sun’s disk, or chromosphere, as photographed in 1968 with 5-inch flare patrol telescope of the Solar Observatory Culgoora.
