The initial results from the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey were published this week in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia . A RACS Sky Virtual Tour, highlighting a number of notable sources, is available from the RACS webpages . The image above shows one such source — the Tornado nebula. The nature of this source has been a mystery for some decades, with suggestion ranging from a supernova remnant in our Galaxy, to the object being a much more distant galaxy itself. It now appears likely the object is near the centre of our Galaxy, with the nebula powered by jets emitted by a central, and now possibly quiescent, compact object.
