National NAIDOC Week celebrations have been held this week to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with this year’s theme being “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud”. At the Parkes Observatory, Dylan from CSIRO’s Indigenous Engagement Office gave a talk to staff and visitors at our Visitors Centre on Monday. This was followed by lunch and special cupcakes, celebrating the Aboriginal Flag. The Aboriginal Flag was designed by Aboriginal artist Harold Thomas and first flown 53 years ago this week. The image above shows one of the cupcakes with Murriyang, the Parkes 64m radiotelescope in the background. Also visible in the background is Giyalung Guluman , the now decommissioned 18-metre Kennedy antenna. The two telescopes were used together in the 1960s and early 1970s to form the Parkes variable baseline interferometer . (Image credit: Tricia Trim)
