National Women’s Day is a public holiday celebrated each year on August 9th in South Africa. The day commemorates the 1956 march of 20,000 women to protest against the country’s oppressive “pass laws” that were used for population segregation and to restrict urbanisation. In recognition of National Women’s Day, the SKAO organised a day-long meeting during the IAU GA featuring an all-women line-up of speakers to provide updates on progress with construction, describe how the science community will be able to get involved, and highlight the partnerships being built with local and Indigenous communities.
