Dogs in Space is a 1986 Australian film set in Melbourne that starred Michael Hutchence, of INXS fame. The film revolves around a band named “Dogs in Space”, with Michael Hutchence’s character as the frontman, but pays homage to the first dog in space — the Sputnik 2 mission, launched on 3 November 1957, carried a dog named Laika into Earth orbit. The image above appears to show a successor-in-training for Laika, but was taken recently at the Visitor Centre of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) at Tidbinbilla. The dog is a service and assistance animal that was accompanying a visitor over the southern hemisphere summer holiday period, while the Visitor Centre was open daily. (Image credit: @CanberraDSN)
