A recent ADAP showed some of the 2025/26 vacation students arranging themselves to spell out CSIRO. But as the project of one of the students has revealed — anything vacation students can do, the Universe can do too! Carman Martinez Harris undertook a project to search for Bent Tail Radio Galaxies in data from the ASKAP EMU project. Many radio galaxies have diametrically opposed jets and lobes emerging from around the supermassive black hole at the core of the galaxy. However, these jets and lobes interact with the surrounding intergalactic medium which can result in them being bent and redirected. Various categories of Wide-Angle Tails, Narrow-Angle Tails, and Head-Tail galaxies have been defined and studied over the years. Carmen’s project helped identify 1497 new bent-tail radio galaxies for further study. Five galaxies from her study are shown above.
