There was a lunar eclipse last night (which was completely clouded out in Sydney). ATNF co-supervised PhD student Rami Mandow was posting some news about the lunar eclipse on Instagram in advance of the event, and overlaid Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ song. This got him thinking …. Do lots of people use this song during eclipses in the digital age (like on Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.)? Do young folks understand how this song shaped a generation?! So, he did a quick check on Google Trends and Wikipedia, and it turns out …. it does indeed! Rami put the image above together based on Wiki sources and Google Trends. The spikes in resurgence of the 1980s power ballad correlate with total solar eclipses. Astronomy is clearly a gateway to excellent music for the younger generation!
