The ATNF remote observing rooms at the CSIRO Kensington site

Thirty years ago, users of the ATNF telescopes had to travel to the telescope sites to observe, with a small amount of remote observing using the ATCA possible from the Marsfield site in Sydney using a modem connection to the telescope. It was not until the 2010s that remote observing with Murriyang, the Parkes telescope, became possible, but these days almost all observing is done via the internet. The Marsfield and Kensington sites have dedicated remote observing rooms with multiple large screens to control and monitor observations. The image above shows view of the ATCA and Murriyang remote observing rooms at the Kensington site in Perth, with the internal glass wall producing a reflection of the images of the rainbow-lit ASKAP telescope that decorates the external windows.
