The University of Tasmania’s 26m antenna at Mt Pleasant, not far from Hobart, is a key element of the Long Baseline Array (as well as an active research telescope on its own). Prior to its relocation to Tasmania in 1985 the antenna was situated at Orroral Valley, near Canberra, where was used from 1965 to 1985 for satellite tracking, in particular of LEO (low Earth orbit) satellites. While most radio telescopes these days have altitude-azimuth mounts, the Mt Pleasant antenna uses an XY mount, which enabled it to keep tracking fast moving satellites as they moved through the antenna’s zenith, which alt-az mounts are unable to do. As the image above illustrates however, this capability can result in it looking somewhat different to more antennas with more traditional mounts! (Image credit: Christoph Brem)
