The Australian honours system recognises the efforts and achievements of Australian citizens, with awards being announced on Australia Day in January and the King’s Birthday in June. This year, Emeritus Professor David Blair of the University of Western Australia was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO), for “distinguished service to physics, to precision measurement science, to gravitational wave research, and to scientific education.” While best known for his gravitational wave research, David was a member of the Australia Telescope User Committee in the early 1990s, and used Murriyang, the Parkes radio-telescope for A narrow-band search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) using the interstellar contact channel hypothesis. He also co-authored papers on The Southern Hemisphere VLBI Experiment program (SHEVE), Subparsec-scale structure and evolution of Centaurus A and Sapphire clocks in VLBI radio astronomy.
