The Mopra Telescope is a 22-m single-dish radio telescope located at the edge of the Warrumbungle Mountains near Coonabarabran, about 450 km north-west of Sydney. It is sometimes assumed that Mopra must be an acronym, with the RA on the end standing for Radio Astronomy, but in fact the telescope takes its name from Mopra Rock, the geographical feature seen in the image above. Mopra, or Mobara, is believed to come from the local Gamilaroi language. The telescope was successfully used for several decades for millimetre waveband spectroscopy, and continues to be used as an element of the Long Baseline Array VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) network.
