Douglas Bock, the Director of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science, was
recently elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of
Technology and Engineering. The award recognises Douglas's
contributions to the development and operation of world-class radio
telescopes. He made critical advances for the Molonglo telescope in
Australia, and the Combined Array for Research in Mm-wave Astronomy
(CARMA) in the USA, before leading commissioning and operations of the
Australia Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Pathfinder in WA. He is
Australia’s Science Director on the SKA Board and led the Operations
Working Group. He has shown strategic vision and expertise in
constructing telescopes with complex electronics and precision
engineering. The new Fellows will be formally welcomed into the
Academy at its Annual General Meeting in Melbourne on 29 November.
