The construction of Parkes
Yesterday's ADAP showed the completed Parkes telescope around 1961, and today's winds the clock back a little further. The story behind the Parkes telescope is told in Peter Robertson's Beyond Southern Skies. The first design concepts for the Parkes telescope arose in the early 1950s, with construction beginning in late 1959. The framework for the dish was largely complete by August 1961, when the laying of the surface commenced. The telescope was officially opened on the 31st of October, 1961.
