This week marked the 75th anniversary of radio astronomy in Australia
with the detection of intense radio emission from the Sun,
using WWII radar equipment at the Collaroy Plateau in northern Sydney.
The Northern Beaches Council
has erected a weather shelter to commemorate
this event. The image above provides a detailed view of
a section of the roof, which shows a portion of the surface of the Sun
together with radiation escaping the sun's surface.
The daytime sun shining through the transparent sections casts
the image onto the ground below.
