Searching 10 million stars to see if anyone is home
Are we alone in the Universe? This fundamental question has propelled the curiosity of writers and scientists alike for hundreds of years. A recent blog by Chenoa Tremblay describes work undertaken with the Murchison Widefield Array to search for techno-signatures from stellar systems in our Galaxy. No evidence for advanced civilizations was found, but this was the largest survey of its kind to date and paves the way for more extensive studies with SKA pathfinders, and the Square Kilometre Array itself.
