The Parkes telescope was inaugurated on October 31st, 1961, and
in the lead up to its 60th anniversary, we are featuring
images from the CSIRO Radio Astronomy Image Archive.
Today's image is from 1961 and shows
the installation of focus cabin.
The 64m telescope is a prime focus design, with the receivers
placed in the focus cabin. (This is in contrast to the
Australia Telescope Compact Array, for example, which uses
Cassegrain optics and has a subreflector located just in front
of the prime focus, redirecting the radio waves to the receivers
placed under the dish surface.)
