NAIDOC Week
celebrates the history, culture and achievements of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme is 'For Our Elders'.
Across every generation,
Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a
prominent place in communities and families.
They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates,
teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and loved ones.
Their knowledge and experience, in everything from land management,
cultural knowledge to justice and human rights continues to be invaluable.
NAIDOC initially stood
for the 'National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee',
which was originally responsible for organising national activities
during NAIDOC Week, and its acronym has since become the name of the
week itself.
