Last Friday's ADAP celebrated the anniversary of the
opening of the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station in 1967.
After Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station closed in 1981, the antenna was
dismantled and moved to the Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex
at Tidbinbilla. The quadrapod that supported the sub-reflector was removed
and replaced with the self-supporting sub-reflector visible above. As DSS-46, the antenna
continued to be part of the Deep Space Network, tracking mainly
near-Earth spacecraft for many years including, from 1983 to 1986, Space Shuttle missions.
The antenna was retired from service in December 2009.
