Preparations for the assembly of the
Aperture Array Verification System (AAVS) 3
were described in
in an ADAP earlier this year.
Earlier AAVS arrays used a pseudo-random layout of atennas,
but it was found there were issues with the close proximity of some pairs
of antennas leading to resonances at
frequencies in the range of interest for studies of the Cosmic Dawn.
The image above shows AAVS3 assembly underway to the right, with AAVS2
visible to the left.
AAVS3 is trialling an alternative to the pseudo-random design,
employing a Vogel pattern which follows a
"sunflower" layout providing a uniform areal density and maximal
azimuthal diversity.
