Science with Parkes Workshop
ATNF Lecture Theatre
5th November 2007

Date:Monday 5 November 2007, 10:00 to 17:00
Venue:Lecture Theatre, ATNF Marsfield (site infomation)
Teleconference:A tele/video conference line will be available at 02 6214 3343 for remote participation
As part of a review of ATNF facilities we are holding a one-day workshop on future science with the Parkes Radiotelescope. This meeting will focus on the science to be done with Parkes over the next 5 – 10 years as we move into the ASKAP era.

The workshop will be held together with the biannual ATNF User’s Committee meeting. All members of the user community are invited to attend the workshop.

This workshop will have a mixture of invited and contributed talks. We invite short (~10 min) contributed talks from members of the community. Those interested in presenting a talk should contact the scientific organisers: Naomi McClure-Griffiths and Simon Johnston.

Motivation

The Parkes telescope has been, and continues to be, a front rank scientific instrument. Its scientific output from large scale surveys of HI, pulsars, masers, continuum and polarization form a cornerstone of modern radio astronomy. The impact of the science from Parkes can be judged through, for example, the citation rate which is the highest from any radio telescope world wide.

As we move towards ASKAP, Phase I of the SKA and ultimately the full SKA, we need to determine the role that Parkes will play into the future.

This meeting will therefore focus on the science which can be done with the Parkes radio telescope over the next 5 – 10 years, both prior to the advent of ASKAP and during ASKAP operations.

Registration

This meeting is being held in conjunction with the biannual ATNF User’s Committee meeting, which will take place on November 6 at the ATNF Marsfield site. All are welcome to attend the Workshop. There is no registration or fee for the meeting. The meeting will be held in the Lecture Theatre on the Marsfield site of the ATNF. Morning and afternoon teas will be provided for all participants. Lunch can be bought onsite at the canteen.

Also note that the Extragalatic/Intergalactic Magnetic Fields meeting will be held on Nov 7th-8th at ATNF Marsfield.

Speakers

All speakers should email their contributions to at_meetings@atnf.csiro.au before the meeting starts. This will allow people at the remote sites to access your talk.

Other Details

We intend to run tele/video conferencing equipment for this workshop. Please let Michael Dahlem know if you will be listening in remotely.
