The CSIRO Radiophysics Laboratory (RPL) at Marsfield site is in the north-west part of Sydney in the suburb of Marsfield, between Epping & Macquarie Park, about 20 km from the Sydney CBD and approximately 35 km from Sydney Airport.
The current Radiophysics Lab was opened in 1968 when the Radiophysics Division of CSIRO relocated from Sydney University to Marsfield. In 1988 the radio astronomy group within Radiophysics became the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), a separate Division of CSIRO but headquartered on the same site.

Getting to Marsfield by Sydney public transport
The Radiophysics Lab is accessible by bus and/or train in combination. A short (5-10 minute) walk will be required from the nearest bus stop, or a 20-25 minute walk from the nearest railway station. A useful tool for travellers and residents alike is the Transport NSW Trip Planner web app which uses live service information to to give you the best options to get between any two locations in Sydney. Search for the destination “CSIRO” and select “Vimiera Rd opp CSIRO Marsfield”.
Note that all public transport in Sydney is now cashless, requiring either an OPAL transport card or a credit card (Amex, Mastercard or VISA). You simply ‘tap on” when boarding the bus or entering the railway station and “tap off” when alighting.

- Get of the bus at Epping Road at Vimiera Road, Marsfield
- Use the pedestrian bridge to cross Epping Road and walk 10 mins to the CSIRO Marsfield site

- Get on a bus at Macquarie University Station, Herring Road, Macquarie Park (Stand D)
- Get off the bus at Epping Road at Vimiera Road, Marsfield
- Walk 5 mins to the CSIRO Marsfield site
Accommodation
The Marsfield Lodge and the Marsfield Cottage are accommodation facilities at our Marsfield, Sydney, site. They are available for staff, observers, students and collaborators. Both are often fully booked, so it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance.
Marsfield Lodge
The Lodge has:
- Five single bedrooms with ensuite
- Two queen bedrooms with ensuite
- Fully Serviced rooms with linen and towels supplied
- Communal lounge area and fully equipped kitchen, with available fridges, freezers and cupboard space
- Breakfast food provided
- Laundry and ironing facilities

As from 1 September 2022, the rate for a single or queen room, is AUD85.00 a night (bed and breakfast supplies). This price includes the Goods and Services Tax (GST). A 50% discount is available for students.
Payment is required prior to departure. We accept Visa, Mastercard and EFTPOS payments.
Marsfield Cottage
On-site accommodation is also provided at the Marsfield Cottage. This is a three-bedroom cottage on the Marsfield site which is used primarily for distinguished visitors and families on extended visits.
The rate of the cottage from 1 September 2022 is AUD690.00 per week.
