This refreshed ATNF website went ‘live’ on 4 December 2024, aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing user experience for ATNF users and the wider astronomy community. This was the culmination of many months of planning and work by the ATNF Website Refresh team.
Accessibility
Accessibility for websites means creating an online experience that everyone can enjoy, regardless of their abilities. This includes making sure people who are colour blind, use screen readers, or have mobility challenges can navigate and interact with the site easily. Key elements involve using clear language and alternative text for images and ensuring the site is navigable via keyboard.
Content should now be easier to find, read and share whether you use a mouse, keyboard, touch screen or screen reader. Ultimately, an accessible website is one that accommodates all users, making the digital world a more inclusive place.
Under the hood
The new ATNF website uses the Word Press (WP) content manager rather than an ageing version of Drupal. The migration has significantly improved accessibility and maintainability of our ATNF content. The change applies only to the main ATNF site www.atnf.csiro.au. Other related sites such as www.parkes.atnf.csiro.au, www.narrabri.atnf.csiro.au and OPAL.atnf.csiro.au were out-of-scope.
New content
We believe we’ve migrated all important content from the old site to the new, updated it, and re-organised it make it easier to find. Some older, non-critical, content will be migrated according to demand and availability of resources. If you believe we’ve missed something let us know using the contact address below.
The old website remains available for the time being at https://www-tst.atnf.csiro.au as it was in December 2024, but is available only internally (from the CSIRO network).
