Kurt Warhurst took this spectacular picture earlier this month at Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, CSIRO’s Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory. Kurt notes: “The photo was taken Friday June 7th 6:48am, between first light and sunrise, after a hearty breakfast at the Boolardy Accomodation Facility at the start of the day for the operations maintenance team. The day begins with a further 40 minute drive to the ASKAP core area. Most of the year in this region it is very dry, with clear and cloud free, vast blue skies. Just a few days prior, the first of much anticipated annual winter rains arrived. Whilst only a mere 15 mm of rain was received, it was a significant amount for the dry rangelands where the annual average rainfall is only ~200 mm! More rain again appeared two days after this photo was taken, With another 20 mm of rain, the dirt roads were closed for a further day or two by the shire due to the new slippery conditions and potential damage to the surface.” (Image credit: Kurt Warhurst)
