“It takes a village to raise a child” and it takes a dedicated team of technical and engineering staff to move the ATCA antennas from one array configuration to the next! There are 17 standard array configurations, and the time spent in each one — typically several weeks — is determined by proposal pressure. A full work-day and evening is reserved for each array configuration: antennas are disconnected from mains power and data connections to the control building, moved to their new location under generator power, then reconnected. In the late afternoon and evening observations are conducted to determine new pointing solutions for each antenna and baseline solutions for the new array. Pictured above are the ATCA staff responsible for the antenna relocations in a recent reconfig: John Rogers, Mick Shields, John Wilson, Mike Hill and Peter Cox. (Image credit: Meriem Behiri)
