A pair of ultra-diffuse galaxies found in the ASKAP WALLABY survey. From O'Beirne et al. 2025.

November 6, 2025

Optically low surface brightness galaxies have been predicted to represent a significant galaxy population. They may make up 85% of the number density for galaxies with stellar masses > 107 […]

Spectrum of neutral hydrogen column density in M31 galaxy. Advertising Michael Busch's colloquium

November 5, 2025

OH as a Tracer of “CO-Dark” Gas in the Interstellar Medium Near and Far The comparison of hydrogen nuclei column density as traced by the HI 21 cm line, 18cm […]

Two CO clouds from Mopra observations with head-tail distributions and falling into the Galactic disk. From Kohno et al. 2025

November 4, 2025

Kohno et al. report the discovery of two CO (carbon monoxide) clouds which appear to be falling into the Galactic plane at more than 35 km/s. Data from the Mopra […]

Images of two NLSy1 sources with projected sizes of at least 100 kpc. The background grey images are the Pan-STARRS r-band images, while the contours are the radio images from RACS-low (887 MHz; violet), FIRST (1.4 GHz; green), and VLASS (3 GHz; red). (From Umayal et al. 2025)

November 3, 2025

Powerful, large-scale relativistic jets are usually associated with massive, old elliptical galaxies. This paradigm has recently been challenged by the identification of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies, thought to be […]

Rotation curve of the galaxy NGC7162, obtained from ASKAP data, as an example showing the existence of dark matter. (From Reynolds et al. 2019)

October 31, 2025

October 31st is celebrated as Dark Matter Day (amongst other things). Dark matter, as its name suggests, cannot be seen and its presence can only be inferred from the gravitational […]

October 30, 2025

The MeerKAT array of sixty-four 13m antennas, in the Karoo region of South Africa, is being extended with the addition of fourteen 15m antennas, with this MeerKAT Extension project being […]

A new GLEAM-X/GLEAM image of the centre of the Milky Way, cropped from the full image covering 5000 square degrees, from Mantovanini et al. 2025.

October 29, 2025

Spanning 72 — 231 MHz in radio colour, this new image of the Galactic Plane from the Murchison Widefield Array was produced by combining the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA […]

The first MeerKAT Extension dish during pointing checks in October 2025.

October 28, 2025

MeerKAT is an array of sixty-four 13m antennas in the Karoo region of South Africa. The array is in the process of being extended with the addition of fourteen 15m […]

Welcome to the ATNF Daily Astronomy Picture (ADAP), brought to you by staff and users of the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF). Our aim is to present science and engineering results, research highlights from recent publications, technical updates, telescope pictures, conference summaries, etc.

Our site was inspired by the fabulous Astronomy Picture of the Day – @APOD and the ASTRON/Jive Daily Image – @dailyimage.

We welcome all ATNF users to submit an image related to our facilities (Parkes, ATCA, Mopra, ASKAP and LBA), together with a brief description and credits. Submissions can be emailed to the ADAP curator, (phil.edwards [at] csiro.au).

The ADAP was created in December 2014 by Baerbel Koribalski and Simon Johnston. Over 2500 ADAPs have now been published. Vince McIntyre, Nathan Pope, and Andrew O’Brien are acknowledged for their dedicated technical support. The ADAP is currently curated by Phil Edwards.
