Last Friday night (March 14, 2025), a partial lunar eclipse briefly graced the skies over eastern Australia. While much of the world witnessed a stunning “Blood Moon,” Australians could only see the final moments of the eclipse as the Moon rose above the horizon. Locations east of a line from Cairns to Hobart had the best view, with Byron Bay enjoying the longest visibility of about 40 minutes. However, for most of the country, the eclipse was subtle, appearing as a small dark sliver rather than a full red Moon.

While Australians missed out on a full “Blood Moon” this time, astronomers say this was just a warm-up for more spectacular lunar eclipses later this year.
