The new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport will open next year. The M12 motorway, currently nearing completion, will provide direct access to the Airport from existing motorways. The motorway runs through what was the site of the Fleurs radio observatory, operated by CSIRO from 1953 to 1963, and thereafter by the University of Sydney until the 1990s. Running alongside the motorway is a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists, with displays and installations related to the heritage and history of the land. A key theme running throughout the M12 is the story of the Great Emu in the Sky, a Dreaming story of the local Dharug people which tells the story of Mariong (the Emu and Mother) and how she became the Milky Way. The Fleurs installations incorporate emu footprints their design, as indicated above.
