The David Malin Awards are an annual astrophotography competition held by the NSW Central West Astronomical Society. David Malin worked for 26 years at the Anglo-Australian Observatory as photographic scientist and astronomer, earning an international reputation for inventing new ways of revealing information on astronomical plates. The winners of the 2025 competition were recently announced. A selection of the finest astrophotographs will be exhibited for the entire year at the CSIRO Parkes Observatory’s Visitors Centre, and a second set will tour Australia in a travelling exhibition, organised by the Powerhouse Museum, to selected venues around the country. The image above, entitled “Supernova’s Legacy – Vela SNR” was taken by Rod Prazeres and was an honorable mention in the Wide-Field category. The Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR) resulted from a massive star undergoing a supernova explosion about 11,000 years ago. The Vela SNR is about 900 light-years away, making it one of the closest known to us. The association of the Vela supernova remnant with the Vela Pulsar, was direct observational evidence that supernovae form neutron stars. (Image: © Rod Prazeres)
