Spanning 72 — 231 MHz in radio colour, this new image of the Galactic Plane from the Murchison Widefield Array was produced by combining the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) and GLEAM-eXtended (GLEAM-X) surveys, in new research published today in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA) by Mantovanini et al. (DOI: https://DOI.org/10.1017/pasa.2025.10094). The full image covers nearly 5,000 square degrees of the Southern Galactic Plane, is double the resolution and ten times more sensitive than previous efforts at these frequencies, and will be a rich resource for studies of supernova remnants, HII regions, and pulsars. The image above is cropped from the full image and highlights the Galactic Centre region.
