As CSIRO is celebrating its centenary this year it (obviously) celebrated its 50th anniversary fifty years ago! In 1976, CSIRO had more than 2000 scientists and a total staff of almost 7000, organised into 37 Divisions and 6 Units, located across Australia in more than 100 laboratories or field stations. A booklet was published celebrating CSIRO’s first five decades, which notes in its introduction: “The work of [CSIRO’s] 37 Divisions and six Units carries over into almost every field of primary and secondary industry and into many other areas affecting the community at large — the environment, human nutrition, conservation, urban planning. In fact the range of CSIRO’s activities makes it one of the most comprehensive research organisations in the world.” This is reflected in the front cover of the booklet, pictured above, celebrating fifty years of science for Australia, which includes an image of the pioneering Dover Heights radio antenna at bottom left.
