Introduction

The Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory Support Facility (MSF) is located in Geraldton, Western Australia. It is operated by CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (CASS) to support the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO).

Geraldton is located approximately 420 kilometres (approx 5.5 hrs drive) north of Perth on the Brand Highway. Alternatively, SkyWest Airlines fly into Geraldton Airport from Perth multiple times daily, the flight time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

Geraldton is located on the south west coast of Western Australia at Latitude 28.8°S and a Longitude 114.6° E. It has a population of 27,420. It is the fourth largest city in Western Australia.

Geraldton is one of Western Australia's popular tourist destinations due to its high annual average of warm sunny days (it is known as Sun City) and its idyllic beach and coastal location. Geraldton is an important centre for mining, fishing, farming and tourism.

Directions to the MSF

The Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory Support Facility (MSF) can be found in the heart of Geraldton at the Department of Agriculture & Food, Western Australia building at 20 Gregory Street.

• Follow the Brand Highway north from Perth to Cathedral Avenue. Or, if coming from the airport, follow the Geraldton to Mount Magnet road west to its intersection with the Northwest Coastal Highway.
• Turn left at the highway and right at the Brand Highway/Cathedral Avenue intersection.
• Turn left off Cathedral Avenue at Carson Terrace
• Continue onto Augustus Street and go through one roundabout
• Turn right at Gregory Street. The Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia building is the last building on the left in Gregory Street.

Site Information

All visitors to the MSF are required to sign in at the CSIRO MSF Reception Desk. Operating hours for this facility are strictly between 08:00 and 17:00.
