Sunset over the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) at the Murchison Radioastronomy Observatory (MRO). ASKAP is a radio interferometer, consisting of 36 dishes, each 12-m in size and operating in the frequency range from 700 to 1800 MHz. 30 ASKAP telescopes are located within a circle of 2-km diameter, perfect for mapping the 21-cm spectral line of neutral hydrogen in the Local Universe. The remaining 6 ASKAP telescopes are further out, creating baselines up to 6-km long, essential for high resolution radio continuum mapping of millions of galaxies. Engineering and science commissioning is under way with six of the inner-most ASKAP dishes, which are equipped with wide-field Phased-Array Feeds . – (Picture taken in Aug 2013).
