Project Phoenix was a Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program that made use of several of the world’s largest radio telescopes to search for techno-signatures from around 800 stars relatively close to the Sun. The first observations were made with Murriyang, the Parkes radio telescope, on February 2 1995. The project, which ran at Parkes for 16 weeks, is described in an article in The Conversation. A previous ADAP has shown the Flag of Earth flying from the focus cabin of the telescope during the Project Phoenix observations. The flag, adopted by a number of SETI researchers, shows yellow for the Sun, blue for the Earth, and white for the Moon. The media event in advance of the project starting featured a cake, iced to show the Flag of Earth! (Image credit: CSIRO Radio Astronomy Image Archive)
