Space & Astronomy Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship Program 2022/23

Our Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship Program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to work on real-world problems in a leading R&D organisation. Each scholar will undertake a research project under the supervision of our staff.

Participation in the Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship Program has influenced previous scholarship holders in their choice of further study and future career options. Many have gone on to pursue a PhD in CSIRO or to build a successful research career within CSIRO, a university or industry.

Space and Astronomy (formerly CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science) has a long and successful history in the space sector from radio astronomy research, managing complex facilities and observing Earth from above to supporting data and manufacturing supply chains.

Space and Astronomy have 15 projects across a range of disciplines. 


To be eligible to apply you must be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or an international student who has full work rights for the duration of the placement (does not require visa sponsorship).

Vacation scholarships are open to students who:

  • are enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an Australian university
  • have completed 3 years (full-time equivalent) of an undergraduate course, however exceptional second-year students may be considered;
  • have a strong academic record (credit average or higher)
  • intend to pursue a research career in science or technology, or a career in a related discipline; and
  • are able to undertake a full-time placement for 8-12 weeks over the university summer vacation period.


Applications for these studentships are open to Australian and New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and International students who have full work rights for the duration of the placement (do not require visa sponsorship).

Appointment to this role may be subject to conditions including provision of a national police check as well as other security/medical/character clearance requirements.

Placements are full time and will be from 21 November 2022 to 4 February 2023 (although there may be some flexibility). Students may also undertake an observing trip to or remotely observe on the Australian Telescope Compact Array in Narrabri, NSW.

Location:  Sydney, Parkes Observatory Visitors Centre, Perth and Canberra (refer to list of projects above for specific details)
