Abraham Bernstein Colloquium: What do Galaxies, Pigs, and TV viewers have in common?

Abstract

Digitalization has changed the way in which we live, engage in trade, and do science. Estimates suggest that humanity creates 2.5 exabytes per day. For scientists, this wealth of new data sources have opened unexpected opportunities to study questions previously out of reach. But these abundant new data sources come with their own issues.

This talk will provide an overview of how one can address the typical challenges of big data processing with solutions developed in our current research with help of practical examples from astrophysics, pig farming, and the TV industry. Among other things it will present new solutions for scaling data processing, present techniques for addressing data heterogeneity, and discuss novel approaches for preserving privacy.
