STELLAR COSMOLOGY - A NEW ERA OF MILLION STAR SURVEYS
Joss Bland-hawthorn
Anglo-Australian Observatory

During the period 2005-2018, there are likely to be two or three stellar surveys (RAVE, KAOS, GAIA) with the goal of obtaining chemical and kinematic information on millions of stars in the Galaxy and the Local Group. The vast stellar inventory retains a great deal of information on the processes involved in the formation and evolution of disks and spheroids. It may even be possible to identify inhomogeneities which have survived the major epoch of dissipation. We review the likely signatures of galaxy genesis to be revealed by the coming stellar surveys.
