MASS ASSEMBLY OF GALAXIES THROUGH DETAILED STUDIES AT Z=1
Richard S Ellis
California Institute of Technology

I review recent attempts to draw together a unified picture of the emergence of morphologically-regular galaxies from deep surveys of distant field galaxies undertaken at the Palomar, Keck and Subaru Observatories. Near-infrared imaging provides the key diagnostic of stellar mass which traces both the merger history and its role in accounting for the demise of blue star-forming galaxies. Detailed spectroscopy allows further measures of the recently-formed stellar components. Results are compared to predictions based on dark matter dominated models and the prospects for further studies with more distant samples examined.
