CHEMICALLY CONSISTENT MODELS FOR THE EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES

We present our new set of chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis models for galaxies of various spectral types (E-Sd) that take into account the increasing chemical enrichment of successive stellar generations. Simplified 1-zone closed-box model galaxies are described by the time evolution of their star formation rates. After a Hubble time, models are shown to reproduce the observed means and widths of stellar metallicity distributions of the respective local galaxy types. Special emphasis is on the redshift evolution of the stellar metallicity distributions and their imprint on the spectral and photometric evolution of galaxies. The redshift evolution of model galaxies is compared to HDF data. Advantages, limitations and future prospects of our approach are discussed.
