SPECTROSCOPY OF HIGH-REDSHIFT EIS CLUSTER CANDIDATES

We report on the results of an ambitious follow-up program of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) cluster candidates. Using a variety of
instruments we are carrying out photometric and spectroscopic
follow-up programs of all the 310 cluster candidates in the catalogue.
Here we report the results of our first VLT observations using FORS (1 and 2) in order to obtain spectroscopic confirmations of 8
high-redshift systems. From the identification of the candidates the
estimated redshifts range from 0.6 to 1.1. We confirm 6 of the 8
systems to be 3D-concentrations with spectroscopic redshifts
consistent with the original estimates. For the remaining two systems
the data are inconclusive. In particular we confirm two of the systems
to be at z>1. Not all of the systems look relaxed (in particular not
the ones at z>1) and we suggest that these are more likely to be
filaments than clusters.
