OPTICAL AND NEAR-INFRARED STUDIES OF NEARBY GALAXIES
Zhengyi Shao
Shanghai Astronomical Observatory
A sample of nearby galaxies, with both SDSS
(EDR) and 2MASS (2nd release) photometric data
available, has been established. Then the SED of
these galaxies with 8 bands covers both optical
and near-infrared regions. By using the Galaxy
Isochrone Synthesis Spectral Evolution Library
(GISSEL 01), the observational SEDs can be
compared to the models to measure their age
and metallicity of the domain luminous components
for individual galaxies. It was found that, according
to the current observational uncertainty, the age
and metallicity of the nearby galaxy could be
constrained in a quite small region. The relative
error will be less than 10% for a galaxy with 8 Gy
old and it’s metallicity to be 0.02 (solar). The distribution of ages and metallicities for different
types of galaxies can be separated significantly.
Furthermore, the stellar formation history and
color gradient of very near galaxies are discussed.
